City Deploys Additional Buses to meet Increased Ridership Demand

TURLOCK, CA – The City of Turlock (Turlock Transit) has deployed additional fixed route buses and is using more large capacity buses to support a steadily growing ridership base. The additional buses trail the primary buses along specific routes, during specific peak periods, and are expected to help meet the increased demand and ensure sufficient space for continued, future growth.

One of the largest contributors to the fixed route ridership growth is students; specifically, students attending Turlock Junior High School or Pitman High School, served by Route 3, as well as students attending Dutcher Middle School or Turlock High School, served by Route 4. The increases in ridership on these routes, which are primarily observed prior to and after school periods, regularly result in full buses with standing room only.

Prior the COVID-19 pandemic, Route 3 averaged about 600 trips per week, while currently that has increased to more than 1,100 per week. Likewise, the pre-pandemic average for Route 4 was 1,000 trips per week, while currently that has increased to more than 1,700 trips per week. The additional buses are primarily deployed in the afternoon school periods, when student ridership is the highest.
Route 6, which has traditionally been served by a midsize bus due to lower ridership and some logistically constraints for larger buses, has continued to see ridership increases as well. City staff is planning to make minor adjustments to routing and deploy larger buses to serve that route in the near future.

Turlock Transit offers Fixed Route, Paratransit and On-Demand services to the city of Turlock and community of Denair Monday-Friday (6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.) and Saturday (9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.). For more information on services, please call (209) 668-5600 or visit http://www.turlocktransit.com.
